REVIEW: HELASOFT at 16th Chem-Academy Conference on Product Safety

Another perfect start to the new year was the “Product Safety in the Chemical Industry” conference in Bonn, Germany. Speakers from industry and authorities cut numerous paths through the jungle of national and European regulation and provided helpful “signposts”.

Throughout all intensive discussions, one thing became very clear: product safety is always affected. Whether it is the REACH revision, for which the EU Commission is now expected to present its proposal in Q3/Q4 2023. Or the EU recommendations on “Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD)”, the regulations for “Eco Design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR)” or the EU Taxonomy Regulation, which will expand the classification system for sustainable business. Every single topic will affect product safety departments and certainly keep them on their toes.

Therefore, in addition to maps and compasses, a product safety “survival kit” also has to offer suitable digital solutions, that support and relieve the workload of the responsible people.

On the example of the new German Supply Chain Safety Obligations Act (LkSG), which is expected to be even stricter by its European counterpart (CSDD, expected by 2024), Markus Nörtemann (HELASOFT) outlined how software solutions can provide relief here. Beginning with the legal framework and the specific requirements for product compliance, Markus presented examples of the available handouts (e.g. from BAFA and Chemie3) and finally named starting points for possible digital support.

SAP, for example, provides suitable solutions here with its S/4HANA solutions for Product Compliance, which has been expanded by the modules of “Product Carbon Footprint” and “Responsible Design & Production” as well as with the “SAP Sustainability Control Tower”. Another interesting solution is offered by our partner UL Solutions: Their “Supply Chain Network” is an effective tool to gather, share and manage information along the supply chain.

Thanks a lot for all the interesting insights, thoughts and discussions.
We would like to invite you to continue talking on (digital) support topics with us!
