This is most important for products that consist of regulated substances or even pure regulated substances themselves. Some examples regulations for which this is required are REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization of Chemicals) and TSCA (Toxic Substances Control Act). With the help of SAP EHS SVT an exact and in-time tracking in the business processes of production and procurement (planned, existing, produced and imported volumes) of a substance is possible. This data is the foundation for the volume related correct registration of substances is due.
By introducing more and more volume and threshold driven regulations like REACH, the SVT related process has nowadays to be handled much more frequently and in many more organizations then before. Many organizations try to solve this with costly (from an effort point of view), error sensitive and manual or semi-automated processes. The danger is the increasingly frequent and intensive controls (in the case of REACH the so-called REACH-EN-FORCE inspections), especially if the indicated deficiencies (such as missing or bad data) cannot be cleared quickly. We, as a consulting company specialized on SAP EH&S, can help you as a customer to replace/enhance your existing solutions by SVT and with that, to adjust the process of substance volume tracking to your specific needs.
Additional to the normal substance volume tracking functionality, the SVT can be used and set up for registration checks (e.g. check if a substance is allowed to be imported into the target country). SVT is therefore highly relevant when chemical substances or mixtures (regardless of the industry) are produced and/or imported or exported into countries or regulatory areas with volume or registration based regulations. The most important feature of the SAP EHS SVT functionality is the integration into processes like purchasing, production and sales to track the moved volumes and to warn before exceeding thresholds or to even block if a threshold will now be/is exceeded or the import into the target country is not allowed. Additional to the integration into the standard modules like Material Management (MM), Production Planning (PP) and Sales and Distribution (SD) there is also an integration into the Global Trade System (GTS) to enhance the export- and embargo-checks by registration checks, if required.
Almost all regulations/laws are based on the so-called pure substances (list substances). By using SAP EHS PS (Environment, Health & Safety – Product Safety), the required level of the product structure (pure substance level) is provided. This level and its information is, depending on the business (if you produce pure substances or you purchase pure substances or mixtures), not available in the Material Master or Production Planning (bill of material - BOM). In the end, it is not possible to use the SVT functionality without using SAP EHS PS.
The master data quality in the material master and the specification master is essential for the use of Substance Volume Tracking in a company that already has SAP EHS PS in use. This means that material specification assignments, composition data as well as the registration information on the specification (the substance) need to be maintained properly. Ensuring the quality of the master data and organizing the collaboration and alignments of the different departments & divisions can turn the introduction of SVT into a small challenge. But this investment is worth it, because it’s the only way to get reliable data. In the end, the target for using the substance volume tracking process and to spend the required effort is to secure the own value chain and thus the own business.
